A voice reel, also known as a voiceover demo, VO demo, or voice over showreel, is a recorded sample of audio that highlights an actor’s vocal abilities across different genres and styles. It’s what casting directors, clients, and media producers use to assess an actor’s vocal range and suitability for specific projects. Even with the rise of custom demos for auditions, a professional voice reel is still very much the single most important tool for voice actors worldwide. It demonstrates your skills and versatility, allowing you to showcase your voice talent across various mediums like commercials, narration, animation, audiobooks, and more. A well-produced reel instantly captures attention and leaves a lasting, professional impression.

Poor quality audio is a huge turn-off, so making sure your recording and edit are top-notch is essential. You want it to sound amazing. Think about your listener. Sometimes, they don’t know they need a voice until they hear yours, so make it easy for them to imagine you as the voice of their product or service. This means selecting scripts that highlight your strengths and demonstrate your vocal range across different styles and tones.
The Power of Multiple Voice Reels: Showing Your Range and Voice Talent
Show off your range with a voice reel for each target market. Whether you’re good at commercials, narration, animation, or audiobook narration, flaunt it. Don’t be afraid to create different voice reels for specific genres that clients might be looking for. This way, you’ll appear in more searches and might just secure more paid gigs. My Approach to Voice Reel Recording
As a professional voice actor myself, and having worked in voiceover since 1999, I started producing voiceover demos for others in 2006. My experience as both a voice actor and a producer on the receiving end of demos has shaped my unique approach to voice-over demo production. I quickly realised that many producers were using “cookie-cutter” methods, handing actors generic scripts and focusing on overblown production rather than the voice actor’s talent. That’s not how I work. My focus is always “voice first”. Any music and sound effects are there to carefully support the voice and create atmosphere, never to drown out your performance. In fact, for gaming demos, I often supply both a fully produced version and a version with all the production elements stripped away. I limit myself to working with just two voiceover artists each week on producing voiceover demos. This ensures a truly custom and personal demo production service that you deserve.

These days, 100% of the demos I produce are done remotely. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, as long as you have a professional recording set-up that meets the requirements, I can produce your demo reels. The movement towards home studio setups has accelerated worldwide, and with the right set-up, voice reel recording and production works really well using remote tools.
The Consultation and Scripting Process
If you want to work with me on your voice over demo production, the first thing I ask is that you submit a short test recording so I can hear the quality of your set-up and environment. If your audio meets the standard, the next stage is a free Zoom consultation. I’ll talk you through everything and answer any questions you may have. The focus during preparation is always on getting the scripts right for your voice. I don’t believe in handing you a huge document of generic scripts and telling you to pick. For commercial and corporate demos, it’s very much a collaboration, and for gaming demos, I create all of the custom material for you. The aim is to produce something truly special that will serve you for years to come.
The Recording Session and Final Product
For the actual recording session, we set up a simple Zoom call. You’ll be recording the audio on your end, and as your personal demo producer, I’ll be guiding you and directing your performances throughout a calm and unrushed session. Afterward, you just need to send the files over to me. he production of your voice reel recording takes many hours and is a very intricate process. I purposefully don’t guarantee any quick turnaround because I will not rush the production. As your most important marketing tool, it’s worth me spending as much time as is needed to make your voicereel and all the individual tracks shine with the highest production quality. The final stage is mastering, which is the extra polish that will optimize your demo reels for maximum effect. It’s just me from start to finish – no production team. As your demo producer, we are the team that creates your impactful voice over demos! From the consultation, through script preparation, recording session, direction, production and audio engineering through to mastering, it’s just me. When to Update Your Voice Reels
I’ve always maintained that the shelf-life of a voiceover demo or voicereel is probably about 3 years. Your voice changes, the market evolves, and your technical voiceover recording skill improves. Regularly overhauling your voicereels can significantly improve your chances of landing new voice-over work and keep you competitive in the ever-changing voiceover industry. Even in an age where potential clients often ask for custom audition reads of their material, your voicereels are still a great way to quickly showcase your voice talent.
