Having worked with hundreds of voice actors over the last 25 years, I’m keenly aware of the ongoing need for skill development. What I mean is that every voice actor serious about a career must engage with the discipline of a stage, TV, or film actor. If you’re exploring character voices as you prepare your professional character VoiceOver demo, I urge you to consider these crucial points:
Recallable
Ensure every voice on your character voice acting demo is recallable. Imagine this scenario: “We loved voice 7 on your character demo, Debbie, and we’d like something similar for our upcoming game.” Debbie needs to know exactly how she created that voice physically and tonally. Where does the voice resonate in her body, in her face? Make certain all voices on your demo are ones you can easily slip into for paid voice acting gigs.
Sustainable
Just as important is the need for each voice to be sustainable. There’s little point including voices on your demo that could damage your vocal health. You must ask yourself: Could you maintain this voice, which currently features for only a few seconds on your demo, throughout a full week of sessions recording for a video game, for example? There were stories a few years ago about actors in LA studios experiencing vocal strain, even bleeding, from recording screams and yelps for a Call of Duty-type game. Remember, your voice is your most important tool, and you must protect it at all times.
