Why Your Voice Over Demo Matters

Your voice over demo, and particularly your commercial demos, are often the first impression you make on casting directors and clients. It needs to grab their attention and make them want to hear more of your voice acting skills. A well-crafted demo can:

  • Demonstrate your vocal range and versatility across different genres.
  • Save time for busy clients by quickly showcasing your suitability for voice over jobs.
  • Highlight your professionalism and commitment to your voice over business.
  • Serve as a marketing tool on your website and social media, expanding your reach to potential clients.

The Evolution of the Commercial Demo Reel

The voiceover industry is constantly evolving, and so should your demo reel. Here are some key changes to keep in mind for your voice reel:

  • Shorter is sweeter: In today’s world of limited attention spans, demos need to be concise. Aim for around 60-90 seconds for your demo reel. Individual tracks should be even shorter, around 10 – 15 seconds, to maintain a potential client’s interest and show you respect their time.
  • Relevance is key: Your commercial demo needs to reflect current market trends and your abilities. This means updating your demo every few years to stay competitive. As a voice actor, you are likely to improve over time, so your current demo should reflect the truth of your voice and your improved skill sets.
  • Custom is king: While a strong commercial demos are essential, many clients now prefer custom auditions of their specific scripts. Be prepared to offer this in addition to your reel.

Key Elements of Compelling Commercial Demos

To make your commercial demos truly shine and help you secure those voice over jobs, focus on these elements:

  • Variety and versatility: Showcase your range with a selection of material that demonstrates different styles, tones, and energies. Include examples of conversational reads, energetic promos, and sincere narration scripts to capture attention and highlight your flexibility and acting chops.
  • Up-to-date material: Avoid scripts that will quickly sound dated, such as references to specific technology or current events. Timeless reads are crucial for a demo with a longer shelf life. For example, avoid time-stamping your demo with references to a specific iPhone or political campaign.
  • Professional demo production: High-quality audio is non-negotiable. Your demo should be professionally produced and edited to ensure it sounds polished and showcases your best performance. Work with a reputable demo producer to achieve a top-notch demo.
  • Focus on your voice: While music and sound design can enhance your demo, the voice should always be the star. The production should support your performance, not overshadow it.

Finding the Right Voice Over Demo Producer

I am NOT the right demo producer for everybody. I don’t try to be.

Firstly, I produce all demos remotely and this requires the voice actor to have a decent home studio set-up or have access to a professional studio. Secondly, working with me is a collaboration. I’ve met and worked with voice actors over the years who want their hand held at every step and frankly are not committed to putting in the work to create something truly bespoke. Although I will be providing most of the material, collaboration is key to my approach and essential for tapping into what makes you and your voice unique.

If you want the easy route and to run the risk of recording a generic ‘that’ll do’ demo then pop into your local studio and they’ll be happy to just give you a bunch of scripts and hit record. This is NOT the way to record commercial demos or any demos in my opinion.

If you think I might be the right demo producer for you, get in touch today. Please note that I limit to just 2 demo clients each week and therefore sometimes there is a waiting list.

Choosing the right voiceover demo producer is crucial to create commercial demos that will serve you for years to come. Look for someone who:

  • Understands the voice over industry: They should be aware of current trends, what casting directors want to hear, and help you in understanding what type of voice over work you are best suited for.
  • Offers personalised guidance: A good demo producer will collaborate with you on script selection and provide valuable direction, essentially in-session live voice over coaching, to help you deliver your best performances.
  • Has a proven track record: Check out their previous work and client testimonials to ensure they can produce the demo to help your demo be the best it can be.

Keeping commercial demos up to date

As mentioned, it’s essential to keep your demos current. Old demos can misrepresent your skills and even harm your chances of landing voice over jobs.

  • Regular review: Periodically review and cull your voice reels to remove outdated material.
  • New demos: Invest in creating new demos every few years to showcase your growth and evolving voice.
  • Demo length: Remember that demo length is key. Shorter demos are now the norm.

Getting your commercial demos out there and heard!

Your commercial demos are a key marketing tool. Make sure they are easily accessible online:

  • Website: Feature your demo prominently on your website – and make them downloadable.
  • Social media: Share your demo via video and mp3 on your social media platforms. Get a free Audiogram with my demo production services.
  • Online casting platforms: Utilise online marketplaces to showcase your demo to a wider audience.

By keeping your commercial demos current, concise, and professionally produced, and by marketing them effectively, you’ll be well on your way to building a successful voice over career and landing those coveted voice over jobs.
